Games as we know it

Postby VGRetro » Mon Nov 30, 2009 12:57 am

With Sonicguru coming forward to tell of his favourite next generation games, as I do with retro games, I think it would be nice to ask y'all who read this post: Where do you see the medium known as gaming in ten years time?

I want more games made in the style of old Nintendo or Super Nintendo, like they did with Mega Man 9!

In all honesty, this is what I see in the future of gaming. They have all these consoles that are basically starting to rely more on the internet than gaming, and eventually, there will be no more games or consoles in stores, because everything will be downloadable. This, I believe, will result in the next, and probably permanent, video game crash. However, with all the 2D rebirth games coming out, it seems that in spite of relying soly on online gaming, they rely on sidescrolling fun, which we cannot deny was the best way to play games. Today, they're not games, they're interactive CG films. One day, Sidescrolling games will become the superior form of gaming, because let's think about it. Contra Rebirth, Mega Man 9, the upcoming Castlevania and Rocket Knight rebirth games... They're all great, and they're coming back. If anything, it will be these that save us from the next gaming crash.

I actually think 3-D will also play a major impact in the future. They've already developed 3-D television sets and you've seen any recent cinematic release in the past year (whether it be Up or Toy Story or Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs), you'll see how much improved in recent years.

Just like how I think Avatar will be the film that pushes 3-D into being publicly accepted, some company or game developer will create a 3-D game that will really revolutionize future games. I know Steven Spielberg is currently behind a type of 3-D where we won't even need the glasses, so you never know. But, I am completely behind the 3-D revolution.

I fill that no matter how great the graphics are in games it doesn't make them great game.2D Format games will be back for a huge second serving.I have noticed that the next Sonic game to come out with be a good old fashioned 2D platform game. There really hasn't been a great Sonic games since the Sonic and Knuckles Lock on Cartridge.
From 1998 till about 2007 the last few generation games where considered by many stale. The new movement in games took a huge leap.Recently there has been a huge interest again in the older style of games The Sega Genesis collection for the X BOX 360 and PS3 have been hugely successful.Downloadable content on the Wii as well offers lots of older retro games.
There seems to be a bigger interest in old school then new school.I doubt in 10-15 years till people will still be talking about the current games for the PS3,360 and Wii as People talk about all the games from the Super Nes and Mega Drive.
I hope there will be more 2d based games.

2D? 3D?
None of that matters if the game sucks.
Believe it or not-3D is not the devil. Some detailed backgrounds can help add to the atmosphere.
And 2D is not God Awesome.

But all of that is irrelevant next to my main reason for buying games.
Does it tell a good story?

Story doesn't mean much if you can't play the game, if it's bad controls or whatever. Are you seriously going to tell me that if the game has such bad controls and awful gameplay, bad graphics, music and so on, you'll still like it if it has a good story?

Silent Hill 1
Resident Evil 1
Both had lame graphics, both were great games.
Never played a game with bad controls before.
