I remember getting really up to it and excited when I heard about this 3 part video. The scary yet funny thing was, I knew "that number" one was going to be number one, cos that's where it deserved to be, That Fellow has done a great job at picking out some great cartoons.
Five years ago here in England, there was a 3 to 4 hour late night Documentery on the 100 Greatest Cartoons and looking at it now, I can't believe they did NOT include some of the VERY greats on the list, since it was broadcast in Britain and airing there, no wonder, but I'm still so disappointed...some that That Fellow had listed were on there, I may point'em out as the list goes on...of course, SPOILER: (for those who've not seen it, but the whole 4 hours is up on YouTube) number one just had to be a certain Matt Groening creation...
Also why the heck did Pokemon and stuff get on there...? I don't know what went through everybody's minds to put that there, plus, couldn't they just put Looney Tunes on there just ONCE and NOT add seperate characters on there? Sheesh, could've had some room for even better cartoons.
Anyway, my thoughts on this wonderful list, That Fellow had done.
Here's the full list for future reference:
1. Animaniacs - Brilliant, absolutely fantastic cartoon, still remains one of my all time favourites from the 90s, I love Tom Ruegger's creations, with brilliant animation and quality writing, no cartoon I've seen, has ever been as funny as Animaniacs. Back in the days, everybody would be quoting it, it was like a habit they had. I remember, Boxing Day, watching the finals of the top 30 first time, I let out a triumphant "YES!!!" when this made it, it's just that good. 99 episodes isn't bad although the pressure was tough and of course the cartoon was eventualy cancelled in 1998, but a five season run is fantastic. And did I mention that the voice cast was brilliant too? You can never get a better cast member of voice actors such as Frank Welker, Maurice LaMarche, Tress Macneille, Jess Harnell, Jim Cummings, Sherri Stoner and even Rob Paulsen, to fill such roles for amazing characters. Animaniacs was a perfect example of what animation was almost made for.
Note: Did NOT make it into the 100 Greatest Cartoons sadly...neither of Tom Ruegger's masterpieces did, I'm sorry to say...
Honurable mention: 13th September, 17th anniversery of Animaniacs
2. Batman: The Animated Series - Well, as a little girl, I somtimes watched it, since I had no sisters, I guess that's reasonable, I sometimes was a tomboy, but my tomboyishness faded a lot and sometimes I never got around to watching this since i was enjoying myself outside. But looking at this now, it is a fantastic series, the acting is brilliant and they sound like real people, the storylines were perfect and didn't always have happy endings (which is what most cartoons today all seem to have.,..ugh) and wow...full orchestra doing the music, what happened to stuff today? Ugh...I'm just glad I stopped watching cartoons coming out in the later years. Note: Did not make it onto the 100 GC list...and again, I think it deserved to, was just too good.
3. South Park - Wow, South Park still remains one of my favouritest on going cartoons, I haven't really gotten around to watching the later episodes, but i still watch them when I can, it's just a brilliant show, Matt Stone and Trey Parker are just genius, I've loved this cartoon since I was 10 (yeah, we were bad kids haha), yes, some of the writing and everything is so damn crude, but still remains fresh, funny and intelligent. And my guess on what makes South Park so incredibly funny and that's Cartman...how can anyone be so racist, evil, yet so lovable, funny and just somewhat an icon amongst South Park fans? Hes just hilarious to watch, for me, the earlier first 2 seasons were always the best, still get good laughs out of them. Note: This cartoon DID make it to the 100 GC list, but I don't shan't tell you where, so not to spoil it for anyone who wants to check the list out.
4. Futurama - Well...I've watched it, it's clever and fun...but I'm nore really a big fan of Futarama...I don't hate it, I just can't seem to get around to watching it somehow, I know not EVERYBODY's a big fan of the Simpsons and that's fine....people like what they like and hate what they hate or personally just aren't big fans of everything everyone else is. It's a cartoon of heart and justice to some of us and it does capture some emotional segments which pour into sadness...again, like Batman TAS, Futurama doesn't always have such happy endings...sometimes involving flashbacks and the likes, it is a fun, clever show. Note: This DID make it to the 100 GC...
5. The Adventures of Tintin - I can sort've remember watching this the first time around when there was nothing else on, I think after two or three were taped on a blank casette, it grew on me after watching them repeatedly, and to be honest, it's not that bad for a cartoon show based off some comics, it's dark, strong, mysterious and isn't afraid to show scenes of strong serious peril, like sandstorms, gunshots and even kidnap. I never really read the comics, but watching the cartoons, I admit it was a great series, even had some humour to it thanks to Captain Haddock. Note: this did make it into the 100 GC
6. Ren and Stimpy - well...it's bizzare, off the wall, nuts, whacky and overall very very wild, I'm not a great fan of Ren and Stimpy, sometimes Ren's psychotic behaviour sort've scares me, but I'm not afraid to even quote the infamous "YOU SICK LITTLE MONKEY" time to time. And I do agree...I can't believe Nickelodeon even aired this in the first place and parents letting their kids watch it...that's just twisted and effed up LOL. For me, Invader Zim and Rocko's Modern Life were more of my NIck cartoons, but Ren and Stimpy deserve some credit overall. Note: It did make it into the 100 GC.
7. Sonic the Hedgehog (Sat Am) - Ah...now back in the 90s, I loved Sonic the Hedgehog, i loved the games, the comics (although I was a slow reader at the time) and generally at the time, anything related to Sonic. And when I first discovered AoSTH, I couldn't believe he had his own cartoons...but looking back now, I can't believe how stupid they were, just crazy, senseless...
Satam though, even as a little girl at six, I enjoyed this so much, out of any of the Sonic cartoons, this was actually the one with effort put into it, I bloody hated Sonic X, Sonic Underground was too deperessing and never even finished properly, Adventures of Sonic was just too silly for it's time...but Satam, was dark, clever, and had the best voice cast out of the lot (although to be honest, I did find Jaleel's role as Sonic decent but annoying), Robotnik was actually a nasty piece of work and Jim Cummings as the role was perfect, since he knows how to pull off a good cartoon villain esque voice well. Sonic Satam was one of the few cartoons based off of Comics and Video Games that was actually worth watching. And may I say this but...Rest in Peace Ben Hurst, your work was astounding to the Sonic Community. Too bad this didn't come back for a third season which was in the works and making. Note: This didn't make it into the 100 GC...
8. Freakazoid - Saturday mornings back in the days were a blast, thanks to Steven Spielberg, Tom Ruegger and everyone, at first I wasn't that much of a fan of Freakazoid, took me a while to even understand and appreciate the humour, but a few years later when it aired on Cartoon Network, it started to grow on me. It's such a fun show! It's random, crazy in intelligent ways and...come on, it's a Warner Bros. cartoon, how can you go wrong with that? Plus, featuring and starring the first superhero based off of the internet, how awesome is that? Of course, like all the GOOD shows, it was cancelled...WHY do all the best cartoons get cancelled? Why? Is money more important than animation? I can tell in the hearts of John P. McCann, Paul Rugg, Tom Ruegger and everyone that they were really upset deep down inside, when these shows were declared cancelled. Note: Didn't make it to the 100 GC
9. Darkwing Duck - I can remember so well getting into Darkwing Duck, I loved it, thought it was just hilarious, Jim Cummings yet again was ace at providing the voice of the lead titled character, even the villains were threatening in their own ways. Disney sure knew how to parody the Dark Knight in their own ways and with anthropomorphic critters as well. DW was a fun show, definately one I enjoyed saturday mornings. Note: Didn't make it into the 100 GC.
10. The Bugs Bunny & Tweety Show - Funny enough, it was called the Bugs Bunny Show when I lived in Ireland, but what the hey? It's Looney Tunes, I effing love the Looney Tunes, Warner Bros. answer to Disney's "Silly Symphonies", Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies were just terrific to watch, who says that cartoons are just for kids? I enjoyed these cartoons many times as a child and have loved them up until the present day, they are brilliant, humourous, and have such likable wonderful and unforgettable characters. Note: Looney Tunes did make it into the 100 GC, more than once...o_O;
11. Pinky and the Brain - ...an idea just so clever and bizzare, I mean a cartoon about two little lab mice seeking world domination...just one of the funniest ideas ever to hit the 90s TV. Maurice Lamarche and Rob Paulsen reprising the roles after this spun off from Animaniacs was just what made this cartoon so good. The plots were a lot deeper than they were in Animaniacs and watching about 20 minutes of two mice on their schemes to rule the world is just brilliant. Simply one of the best cartoon spinoffs ever.
Note: Didn't make it to the 100 GC
Honurable mention:And let me let this out but...happy 15th Anniversery to this cartoon.
12. The Jetsons - Never really was a fan of the Jetsons to be honest, was like the future answer to the Flintstones. I'm not really a big fan of Hanna Barbera cartoons...so there isn't much I can say about the Jetsons.
Note: This didn't make it into the 100 GC, I think
13. Kim Possible - Again, around this time, I stopped watching most cartoons, especially on saturday mornings, so there's not much I can say about Kim Possible, I have at least watched one episode and from what I can remember, it was pretty good...but yeah, there isn't much I can say about this cartoon. Note: didn't make it into the 100 GC
14. DuckTales - Who didn't wake up saturday mornings to watch Ducktales? Seriously...I'm gonna go with the Nostalgia Critic and say that YES, the theme song is highly addictive, catchy and will never leave your head. Pretty much this cartoon did have some sort of an Indiana Jones feel to it so it was pretty much a treasure hunt show...for anyone who has seen the SpecSavers commercials, don't you think Scrooge McDuck should appear in one? Since he dives into all that gold and manages NOT to break his specs? LOL ah well, that's cartoons for you. Ducktales was one of the first of the Disney cartoons I ever saw I think. And for it's first...(?) it was pretty impressive. Note: did not make it into the 100 GC
15. Teacher's Pet - I'm afraid to say that I never saw it, sorry, I kinda stopped watching Saturday morning shows at the time... Note: never made it to the 100 Greatest Cartoons...
16. Thunderbirds - ...well never really was a fan of Thunderbirds...nor as much as I was of Captain Scarlett, Joe 90 or Stingray, I don't know why, I just never really could watch these shows as a kid, always found'em boring...no offence man. I don't bash people for liking things I'm not into. Note: didn't make it into the 100 GC
17. The Powerpuff Girls - God...I remember as a kid actually being addicted to this...but to be honest, it is a very funny and very clever show. Yeah so they look like cute little ragdolls who attend kindergarten ...ugh...but with intelligence and brains of older kids who fight crime and beat villains up constantly all the time, it's clever. To be honest, what made this cartoon so funny, was the villains, seriously just some of the funniest characters in the show. Also...this cartoon debuted November 18th 1998...my tenth LOL....scary huh? I'm kinda surprised as well that this cartoon was so damn violent, involving beat ups and blood and guts, but that's what made this show so epic, it wasn't just a girly cartoon considering it's three main protaganists. (thank god)
Episode to DEFINATELY check out: One that parodies the Beatles, trust me, it's just hilarious, one of the funniest episodes out of any of them.
Note: Did make it into the 100 Greatest Cartoons, surprisingly.
18. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - One of my earliest childhood memories, I was a real tomboy as a little girl, I loved the Turtles, loved them. Always smiling, always eating pizza, definately one of the best cartoons to hit the 80s and onwards to the 90s. Starting off more fun and humourous, later turning more serious and dark, did I also forget to mention how funny the Shredder was? He tries to be a serious threatening villain but even made us laugh at the best of times. Ninja Turtles will always remain a great memory in my heart from my childhood. I'm just so glad to have had brothers to enjoy the show with.
Note: Yes, it did make it into the 100 greatest cartoons and bloody well deserved it.
19. Tiny Toon Adventures - Talk about childhood memories...I can remember way back when Tiny Toons was on TV, although at times, I never really got around to watching it when it was on...pretty much WB's answer to all those Hanna Barbera cartoons where they seemed to "child-ise" the likes of Tom and Jerry, Scooby Doo and the Flintstones. But in a new direction, instead, adding other characters who are intending a school to learn how to become Looney Tunes, that's ...original for it's time. Make that quite original ;D also for it's time, the animation was brilliant, they didnt stand still when they were talking, pretty much moving around and everything, that was just remarkable. I can imagine how expensive this cartoon must've been to make, because it as a success, even the adults loved it. And for it's time, one of the first cartoons of the 90s (I think) to have a full score and orchestra for every episode which wasn't the same. Tiny Toons also possibly inspired many to learn how to animate and draw at the time...of course, I wonder how many have lost that dream thanks to today's cartoons. And yes, when I heard about the "baby Looney Tunes"...what the hell??? That just has to be one of the most ridiculously embarrasing cartoons WB ever came up with...Looney Tunes and cuteness do NOT go together. Ugh...
Note: Tiny Toons did not make it to the 100 GC
20. X-Men - Again, I never really watched much of X Men when I was a kid, so there pretty much isn't a lot I can say about this cartoon, but it was epic, had so many characters to choose from and who cannot love the theme tune? Too bad I never really got into it as a kid...used to believe I wouldn't like it cos it was more aimed at lads LOL
Note: Did not make it to the 100 GC
21. Dexter's Laboratory - One of Cartoon Netowork's more popular shows at the time, personally I watched this show as a kid but I never really got into it, to be fairly honest, I don't know why, I just never really got into it, I mean it was a fun show and all but it did sort've get annoying, but a show about a little boy who'd been a genius ever since he was an infant, that works...of course Jimmy Neutron has to try and do the same to see if it can rival Dexter's Lab...typical
Note: Didnt make it into the 100 GC
22. Gargoyles - One of the darkest of Disney's shows ever produced, I never really watched it, but I do give credit to Disney for making such a cartoon, I only watched it at the time to wait for another show to start right after, never really paid much attention to Gargoyles, probably have to start watching the stuff I missed as a child LOL
Note: Did not make it into the 100 GC
23. Pepper Ann - never saw it, sorry, not much I can say about Pepper Ann. Note: didn't make it into the 100 GC
24. Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers - Used to be one of my favouritest of the Disney cartoons at the time, again they did put some effort into such a cartoon. Corey Burton, Frank Welker, Jim Cummings and Tress Macneille all did a great job with the voice acting and how can nobody get nostalgia when hearing the theme song? Of course...I don't know why so many lads found Gadget Hackwrench attractive? LOL She's a little mouse??? What's next? The top 10 most attractive female furries? LOL (kidding, kidding). Note: didn't make it to the 100 GC
25. The Flintstones - Like I said, I wasn't the biggest fan of Hanna Barbera cartoons, although I did kinda prefer the Flintstones more to the Jetsons, although I never really was a fan of the cartoon itself, did have it's moments though where I did get some laughs. And ugh...don't remind me of the movie...was so bad it made me wonder what Spielberg was thinking LOL
Note: The Flintstones did make it into the 100 Greatest Cartoons
26. Angry Beavers - Well, I did watch it, was a fun show, just not my favourite, I'm not a big fan of Nickelodeon cartoons like i said, except for Invader Zim and Rocko's Modern Life.
Note: didn't make it into the 100 GC
27. Superman: The Animated Series - never really got into Superman, so I never really watched the cartoons either, sorry, there's not much i can say about Superman.
Note: didn't make it
28. Inspector Gadget - never really saw much of Inspector Gadget so there's not much i can say about this show, again sorry.
Note: Did make it
29. Recess - I occasionally watched Recess, just never got into it, was quite a fun show, still think I should check out the first film, since it looked pretty good for a movie based off of a saturday morning cartoon. I might give it a go, yeah.
NOTE: didn't make it into the 100 gc
30. Top Cat- One of the few HB cartoons I actually like, Top Cat's just hilarious, last time I remember watching it was with my boyfriend, I started to understand it a lot more then, it's just that good. Too bad it only lasted for a decent 30 episodes...curses to Scooby Doo for surpassing it. But it is a great cartoon and I love the voice acting.
Note: Yes it did make it
