Your Thoughts on Horror Remakes?

Postby KennyFarino » Sat Sep 12, 2009 4:53 pm

Good lord am I sick of them. Halloween 2, Prom Night, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre... MAKE THEM STOOOOOOP!

What are your thoughts on the hottest or most current remakes of our beloved icons? With the successful Friday the 13th remake, there is a small silver lining in the horizon. Will Freddy and Chucky get well-received reception in their upcoming remakes? We'll have to find out later, huh?

In regards to remakes in any genre, I feel that it could both ways. You could end up with a remake that betters the original film (like The Departed, which I felt improved on its Chinese counterpart) or you can have something awful that completely regurgitates over the original story. Something like Roland Emmerich's Godzilla, for instance.

However, when it comes to major horror characters like Jason Voorhes and Freddy Kreuger (sp?), they have appeared in so many films, a remake isn't going to make a major difference. I haven't seen the Friday the 13th remake, but let me take a gander at what happens. Some stupid teenagers arrive at Camp Crystal Cake, where they just make love, Jason starts killing them one by one, until one lone female protagonist manages to defeat him. Am I right, because that seems to happen in the sequels?

So, I don't have a morbid hatred for remakes like most people do. If you get a director who can do the material justice, it can work well (see: Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead).

You are mostly correct, sir! Some dude is also looking for his sister, battles Jason, they both defeat him, and they are saved!

You do raise an excellent point about remakes indeed, sir. For instance, some remakes I absolutely adore are (John Carpenter's) "The Thing," "Friday the 13th," and (Peter Jackson's) "King Kong"! With this current glut of bad ones like the Rob Zombie Halloween series, bad directors are taking up the mantel in many horror do-overs. This has really been the decade of the remake, and I can see that when the decade wraps up, we'll have many more under our belt to either love, or hate!

I personally think horror remakes should be done when the original movie was bad. They need to stop remaking the classics; they can't be topped. Go for the turkeys instead, since you KNOW you can do better with minimal effort.

I can bet that any amateur filmmaker can easily make a better Manos: The Hands of Fate or Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.

Apparently, a remake of Plan 9 From Outer Space is getting released.

Looks really boring, to be honest. You can make fun of the original all you want, but at least it was entertaining.

Seriously?

In all honesty, I think that looks pretty damn amusing.

Right, now that I've regained my composure, lemme try that again. Remaking any Ed Wood movie would actually be a wise move considering that most of his movies are pretty bad to begin with. However, let's hope they don't make this Plan 9 remake SUPER SERIOUS, and make the original actually look good. I'd like to see them take the material with a grain of salt, if anything :P.

Someone at the ScrewAttack blogs posted the trailer for the new A Nightmare on Elm Street remake.

Boy oh boy, am I pissed!

Now, in all honesty, it looks like a pretty good movie. Most of the elements of the original film appear to be left intact, and Robert Englund's replacement as Freddy Krueger doesn't bother me at all. He played freaking RORSCHACH, for crying out loud, and his acting ability from that character seems to translate well into Freddy.

My main issue, though, is at the beginning, where Freddy is portrayed as a framed murderer before being burned alive.

Yes, that's right. They make him out to be a victim of tragic circumstance.

BULL. SHIT.

Everyone knows that in the original films, Freddy was a delusional psychopath who killed children intentionally. Once again, in the tradition of Michael Myers, Hollywood pulls the humanization machine on another classic movie monster who's supposed to be the embodiment of pure evil. Monsters are supposed to be the ones targeting the victims, not be victims themselves.

How can you be pissed? At least they got a good actor for Freddy Kreuger, Jackie Earle Haley! He's awesome!
